Thanks to Dutch donors, €750,000 has already been raised for protected medical care close to the front line.
Construction of Ukraine’s largest underground hospital is about to begin. Together with thousands of donors, Protect Ukraine has already raised €750,000 for the project, which is being developed at the direct request of Ukraine’s military medical service. Volunteers, donors, doctors, engineers, writers, entrepreneurs and international partners are working together to make this project possible.

The war in Ukraine has changed. With the continued use of drones and precision weapons, medics, stabilization points and above-ground hospitals have become increasingly vulnerable. A single attack can bring medical care at a location to a complete standstill. That is why a new hospital will be built entirely underground: eight metres below ground, constructed using reinforced concrete, covering 600 square metres. It will include several operating rooms and provide space for multiple surgical teams, allowing them to continue operating safely even during attacks.
By enabling severely wounded military personnel to undergo surgery closer to the front line, valuable time does not have to be lost transporting them tens or hundreds of kilometres. At the same time, hospitals farther from the front will be relieved of some of the pressure.
The hospital is being built by Protect Ukraine and the Norwegian foundation HMM Healthcare. The complete project, including medical equipment, will cost €2.5 million. The two organizations will each cover half of the total cost.
The goal is to have the hospital operational by February 2027. We are not there yet.
